I’m so excited to be speaking at the WordCamp DC! Not only is this my first time speaking at WordCamp it’s the first ever WordCamp DC. The event is less than one week away and event organizers really have me looking forward to the event with the constant stream of updates on social media announcing speakers, sponsors, and special happenings around the main event.
WordCamp DC Lineup
What gets me really excited about WordCamp DC is the opportunity to be among an amazing list of seasoned speakers from in and outside the WordPress community. With roles ranging from Fortune 500 Tech to The White House, the WordCamp is truly packed with a rockstar lineup and I’m very humbled to join them.
For my session, I’ll be speaking on the topic of WordPress security and titled, Alternative Hacks: WordPress Security from Outside Looking In. I’ll cover pain points and common mistakes we overlook when trying to harden the security on our WordPress sites. How to Win at Information Architecture by John Cornthwait. In the talk description, John mentions that solid Information Architecture is the backbone of a successful website. I agree completely knowing that if good IA wasn’t developed for some of the largest projects I’ve worked on they would have never launched.
Advanced Topics in WordPress Development by Andrew Nacin. This talk comes with no description which but I think the title covers it all. Something which I’ve been looking forward to more is hearing about more advanced topics at WordCamps and Meetups. The entry level for WordPress is low, which makes it accessible to lots of people but that’s the small tip of a very large iceberg. There are so many surprising, mind-boggling things people are doing with WordPress and I’d love to hear more of those stories.
Un-Scaling WordPres by Mike Schroder. Serving millions of hits per day is possible with WordPress. Shifter can do it, AMIMOTO also makes this possible. I’m curious what experience Mike has to share on this topic about scaling WordPress with a smaller footprint.
How a Local Government Ditched a Proprietary CMS and Embraced WordPress by Maureen Dilg and Katie Pegoraro. This talk hits close to home for WordCamp DC and it touches on something I’ve thought a lot about. What can Govt. offices gain by adopting Open Source Software and tools such as WordPress. How does it impact cost? Security? and momentum in something that has been historically a slow moving train.
